About Kariong
A locality found within the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, Kariong is under the jurisdiction of the local government area of the Central Coast Council.W.H. Parry was the first British settler in Kariong in the year 1901. Established in 1911, the Mt Penang Training School for Boys became the Mount Penang Juvenile Justice Centre. Along with former officer Basil Topple, several of the boys were from the training ship Sobraon, which had been in Sydney Harbour before being condemned. Originally known as Kendall Heights, the town of roughly fifteen families - most of whom were training school employees - was later renamed Penang Mountain. Approximately around 1947, the name Kariong was given to the area. The Geographical Names Board states that the Aboriginal name Kariong translates to "meeting place". The Gosford Glyphs, a collection of over 300 sculptures set into two parallel sandstone walls that resemble Egyptian hieroglyphs can also be found within the suburb.
